This Week: NAFCU Engaged on Capitol Hill
The association’s award-winning advocacy team will monitor several committee hearings where topics of interest will be discussed and engage with lawmakers on credit union issues.

Of note, the House Armed Services Subcommittee markups for the fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) will begin this week. NAFCU’s advocacy on the FY2022 NDAA began earlier this year and the association will remain engaged with both the Senate and House Armed Services Committees as they consider it to protect credit union nominal leases on military installations and prevent efforts to allow all banks to operate rent-free on military bases. The Senate Armed Services Committee held a closed markup of its version of the legislation last week but has not released the adopted text.

Additionally, the House Financial Services Committee is scheduled to meet for a markup of legislation on Wednesday.

Hearings happening in Congress this week include:

• a House Financial Services Subcommittee hearing tomorrow to discuss central bank digital currencies;

• a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing tomorrow to explore preventing and responding to ransomware attacks;

• a Senate Banking Committee hearing tomorrow to discuss cryptocurrency;

• a Senate Banking Committee hearing tomorrow to review protections in place for student loan borrowers; and

• a Senate Banking Committee hearing Thursday will examine expanding the 36% all-in military interest rate cap to all consumer loans.

Also happening this week:

• today, comments are due to NAFCU on the Federal Reserve's FedNow proposal;

• tomorrow, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) begins its two-day policy-setting meeting;

• tomorrow, NAFCU and members of the NCUA's Office of Examination and Insurance and Office of Consumer Financial Protection will host a webinar on exam expectations for larger credit unions;

• Wednesday, NAFCU Services will host its Innovation Spotlight; and

• Wednesday, comments are due to NAFCU on the Federal Reserve's interchange proposal.

Stay tuned to NAFCU Today for the latest out of Washington.
