Reaching the next Generation of Credit Union Members
Attracting a new generation of members is essential to ensuring the future relevance of credit unions. Motivation to do so, combined with credit unions’ member-first mission resonating with younger generations, position credit unions as ideal financial partners.

In the latest episode of A CU Seat at the Table podcast, Michigan State Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) Chief Engagement office Ami Iceman talked about reaching young members. She pointed out that a good place for credit unions to start is by actively working to educate the general public as to the credit union difference and mission.

“We know that as a population [Generation Z] is a very connected community. They obviously have access to a lot of information,” she said, adding, they are seeking “you to speak to them directly and know who they are as a member and who they are as a person and what they care about. They are very cause-driven. They care a lot about community and being engaged.”

With their membership including students on campus, that means MSUFCU also works to support their activities and “try and show up as part of their community, not just as a financial institution, which I think is what credit unions do better than anyone else in the game. We actually care, listen, and understand.”

Iceman also highlighted MSUFCU’s youth accounts for children from birth to age 18, and how this helps position the credit union as members’ financial partner throughout their life.
