| Financial Literacy is Essential at all Ages |
|
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined the Michigan Credit Union League’s (MCUL) latest Credit Unions, Coffee, and Conversations podcast for a focus on financial literacy and other key issues. Host MCUL President/CEO Patty Corkery and Whitmer discussed the importance of financial literacy. Both have young adult children who are asking them about everything from buying a home to “what’s a 401(k)?”
“It became clear that it was important for us as a state to take action to make sure people are financially literate at all stages of life in a very practical way, so people can be successful,” Whitmer said. “What’s the point is pursuing a career in something you love so you can take care of your family, if you don’t have the basis of how to do those things?”
Whitmer, who has been governor since 2019, said Michigan’s credit unions are a great resource to Michiganders, and thanked MCUL for being “great partners making sure we have state efforts on that [financial literacy] front.”
MCUL has partnerships with school and library systems to promote financial education, and the League and Michigan Credit Union Foundation provide grants and other support to bolster community programs.
Corkery reiterated credit unions’ roles in making life more affordable in Michigan and nationwide. The two also discussed career development tips (especially those for women and young professionals), and how good public policy supports Michigan’s communities.
