| Supporting the Campaign of a Credit Union Champion |
|
A multi-stop campaign tour in western North Carolina Monday highlighted the opportunity to elect a former credit union staff member to Congress. America’s Credit Unions, the Carolinas Credit Union League, and North Carolina Credit Unions joined state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom for the event, stopping at five credit unions around North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District.
Balkcom currently serves House District 117 in the North Carolina General Assembly and worked directly within the credit union movement for years as a branch manager and financial professional.
“Jennifer is truly one of our own,” said Trey Hawkins, head of political affairs at America’s Credit Unions. “She sat across the desk from working families, approved small business and mortgage loans, and understands firsthand how decisions made in Washington land on local financial institutions and the Americans who rely on them. With the balance of power in Congress up for grabs, this race is vital. We are fully committed to helping a proven credit union leader take her Main Street financial experience to Capitol Hill.”
“Jennifer knows our communities and our credit unions inside and out,” said Dan Schline, president/CEO of the Carolinas Credit Union League. “Through her experience as a credit union professional and our work with her in the North Carolina General Assembly, the Carolinas Credit Union League has seen firsthand her understanding of credit unions and the communities they serve. We know she will bring a practical, common-sense approach to Washington.”
The tour highlighted the critical role local financial cooperatives play in mountain communities, with visits to branches of Champion Credit Union, Mountain Credit Union, Telco Credit Union, State Employees’ Credit Union, and United Credit Union. During each stop, Balkcom and advocates met with frontline staff and leadership to discuss expanding access to affordable capital, tackling housing affordability, and cutting red tape that drives up costs for local families.
America’s Credit Unions is backing Balkcom through advertising, on-the-ground campaign events, and direct outreach to voters across the district.
