Communicating the Importance of Credit Union Champions
Tuesday’s midterm elections culminate more than a year of work to elect a pro-credit union 120th Congress. Supporting credit union champions nationwide is a long-standing priority for America’s Credit Unions and its League and credit union partners, and this year’s near-record monetary investment was bolstered by direct engagement and outreach for credit union champions during their campaigns.

To create member communications, direct mail and digital ads targeting voters who are credit union members, credit unions across the country welcomed candidates to their branches for photos and videos to support the outreach. Some examples of these credit union efforts include:

• California’s Valley Strong Credit Union hosted Rep. David Valadao (R) for content captured and distributed by America’s Credit Unions and California’s Credit Unions. President/CEO Nicholas Ambrosini said hosting the Congressman, “connecting him with our employees, and encouraging our members to vote for him all serve to strengthen the bond we have with a bona fide credit union champion."

• Nevada’s Credit Unions and member credit unions created communications in support of three members of Congress, Reps. Steven Horsford (D), Dina Titus (D), and Susie Lee (D). Silver State Schools Credit Union hosted Lee, and CEO Ralph Ramirez said it “provided a valuable opportunity for our credit union advocates to showcase the credit union difference, discuss key issues such as fraud prevention, and strengthen relationships across the credit union movement."

• Pennsylvania credit unions distributed member communications on behalf of Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R), and CrossState SVP of Government Relations Christina Mihalik said, “We are proud to lean into that on-the-ground engagement to support a leader who has consistently stood with credit unions and the people who depend on them."

Many candidates face challenging races in the midterm election. This kind of support goes to policymakers who have proven to be strong allies of credit unions, regardless of partisan politics.

In New York, FourLeaf Credit Union has been heavily engaged with these types of activities in support of credit union champions, including Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) this election cycle.

“I think it's one thing for an elected official to see the number of credit union members in their district, but it's another thing entirely when credit unions actually show up and take action to support their efforts. I think that makes a real difference,” said Senior Government Affairs Relationship Manager Michelle LaTorre.
